Rogue Names: An Exploration on the Sound of Words

In the world of business, names are important. They can make or break a company’s reputation and success. The name is often the first impression that people have about your brand, so it has to be memorable and unique. When you think of McDonald’s, for example, what words come to mind? You probably say “fast food” or “hamburgers.” This is because they use their name as a way to set themselves apart from other restaurants in the fast-food industry by making it synonymous with their product offerings. But there are some companies out there who choose names without considering how they sound when spoken aloud – and these rogue names could lead to disaster!

This blog post will explore how one word can change an entire company’s identity.

By not taking into consideration how names sound when spoken aloud, some companies have made a bad decision in naming their brand. For example, you probably didn’t know that the grocery store Trader Joe’s was named after founder Joseph E. “Joe” Coulombe and his nickname of “Trader Joe.” If they had decided to name it something else (like say, Supermarket), then people would be able to associate it with other stores like Kroger or Safeway more easily because those are common supermarket names. The word ‘trader’ isn’t really known for its association with groceries either which can make misconceptions easier if people don’t typically read about the company’s backstory before they buy from you, but rather just see the name and assume.

The store Target was named after founder George T. Dayton’s nickname of “Tar.” It wasn’t until the 1980s when they made it more clear that their name actually means ‘targe’ – a type of shield or target used in medieval times, but nobody really associates those two meanings together anymore which is unfortunate because people don’t know what ‘tar’ even stands for! Even worse off are companies like Goody who have no meaning at all to them since there are so many different spellings (or pronounciations) to choose from: G-O-D-E-, goodie, Puh-tooey! It can be overwhelming when you’re expected to read an unfamiliar phrase.

In the case of some companies, like eBay or FitBit for example, there’s a story behind it (except most people don’t know that.)

eBay was founded by Pierre Omidyar as an auction website where items are bought and sold in time-limited auctions to get around traditional retail markups which is why they’re called ‘auctions’. But what most people don’t realize is that online auctions have been around since the 1990s! They seem so new when really their history goes back over 20 years. With Fitbit you can understand how something could be named after physical fitness because those two words When it comes to chewing gum, there are many popular brands like Trident Gum, Tootsie Rolls, and Twink. While they might sound alike in name or flavor descriptions, the taste is a whole different story. In order to find your favorite new brand of gum you’ll just have to keep trying them until you find the one that clicks with your tastes!

After reading the blog post about how names can be derived from their meaning, I thought of some words that might have been named after what they represent. Words like Mercedes and Ferrari are both vehicles but you’ll pay hundreds more for a car with one brand over another. When it comes to chewing gum there’s Trident Gum and Tootsie Rolls which sound similar in name or flavor descriptions yet have different tastes. There’s also Twink, an example of something sweet sounding despite being sour tasting. What do you think these things were named after? Why don’t you share your thoughts on our social media below?
